The Dutch Knight Returns (The Hangover)

Sorry, I've been reading a lot of Batman comics over the last few weeks.

If we're to ignore the fact that I've recently married, and I haven't written a thing because of the long (and much enjoyed) honeymoon, I'll cut straight to the chase: I'm not ready for 2011. There are still plenty of games from the years previous with which I am yet to properly engage. A gaming hangover as it were.

My plans for the next few weeks involve finishing Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. From there, my priorities are unclear. Do I finally finish Mass Effect 2? Do I delve into the thirty-something games I purchased during the Steam Holiday Sale? The point of this musing for you all, is that I probably won't be touching any games released this year until March, with the release of Marvel Vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds.

Speaking of the Steam Holiday Sale, it's still going until approximately 4am Tuesday (AEST), so get on there and grab a bargain (you will have missed some of the more unbelievable daily specials, but there are still plenty of games going for little more than a song). Some of my picks included Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition, Command & Conquer 4: Tiberium Twilight, Left 4 Dead 2, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Tropico 3, Machinarium, Hitman: Blood Money, Crysis and Crysis: Warhead. All up I spent just over two hundred dollars, and have (arguably) enough games to last me up until the next end of year sale.

I hope that you'll stay with me until I'm ready for the new year. I've spent just over a month with a Windows 7 phone, and have some impressions to impart. I've also played through quite a few games for the WP7 OS; the problem of course, is that almost all of the games I've played have been released on the iPhone, but still cost more (in the case of Bejewled LIVE, the difference is over 5 dollars! I'm not going to argue semantics either. I know that Bejeweled 2 is available for IOS, and Bejeweled Live is on WP7: but they are the same freaking game).

What did you guys play over the holiday break? Did you miss me? Happy New Year!

  1. Welcome back, brother! Happy new year!

Finally got my new laptop, so it's been pretty much the glorious STALKER for the time I can get away with. Awesome game. Just nabbed The Precursors from Gamersgate as well, another Ukranian FPS/RPG hybrid but sci-fi and goddamn massive.

Bring on the newly-enabled platform of goodness. I'd be interested in checking out C&C4, especially considering it got a bad wrap in the press. I think it'd be quite good, played with friends. Over my budget, though.

  2. Getting my new laptop tomorrow (hopefully). Very excited about having another platform as well. I can play mid-range games on my current machine, but nothing like Crysis or Just Cause 2 (which I also picked up during the Steam Sale for the paltry sum of $7.49. MADNESS!). I nabbed C&C4 when it was one of the daily specials. Paid more than I wanted to, but just low enough to make it under my price sensitivity.

Another Ukranian FPS/RPG hybrid? Those Eastern Bloc countries love their genre fusion!

  3. Viva la Dutch! Glad to have you back.

I'm keen to play and review Donkey Kong Country Returns and a couple of other Wii titles - I finally hooked it back up to the TV (those wall brackets are cool but very inconvenient when you have minimal AV outlets and multiple inputs). I'm in the middle of Brutal Legend (and you think you are behind in your games) and I'm trying to pick up a copy of Warriors of Rock. I've got a couple of other ideas for stories too so I'll see how they pan out. I might have to hit up Steam myself for more variety.

  4. Embarrasing admission, TJ: I bought a Wii, as I desparately wanted to play Epic Mickey. Now that I've played it, I want my f%#$ing money back.

I got Rock Band 3 in November last year from Play Asia, and it isn't compatible with the DLC I bought (as it is the US version). Slightly bummed, however my brother bought Carly Lego Rock Band for Xmas; so that should sort that issue.

I'm overwhelmed with content to play through at the moment, so after reading my next few posts you could be forgiven for thinking I have no sense of direction.

  5. A Wii?! For Epic Mickey?! Robbery, plain and simple.

STALKER is flat-out ridiculous. I don't think any other game comes close in terms of ambience or atmosphere. Nabbed Call of Pripyat as well, but I'm keeping that for after I finish Shadow of Chernobyl. I think I could survive solely on Eastern Bloc games...while they might not be as pretty, they're a hell of a lot more interesting.

  6. You don't have to tell me dude. I've already shed a few tears over my decision, especially since Reuben informed me that the game is coming to the PS3 with Move support. I am gutted. But still, I can try Kirby's Epic Yarn and Donkey Kong Returns; so all is not lost.

I bought Stalker a while back, but I kept getting my ass handed to me. I'm guessing you would also be interested in Metro 2033?

  7. Yeah, when the price is right for Metro. Did you apply the Complete Mod 2009 for STALKER? Not sure of the vanilla game, but the Complete mod really is a marvel. Upgrades textures, fixes all the bugs, changes the HUD, revamps the sound design. Big thumbs up.

Between Shadow of Chernobyl, Call of Pripyat and Precursors, that's a lot of Iron Curtain gaming to be had. I know it's a bit of a tough sell for something like Precursors being 30USD and only available on Gamersgate, but you might be interested in another game from the same company - Xenus 2: White Gold. If you remember a PC game from ages back, Boiling Point: Road to Hell, Xenus 2 is the sequel. Anyway, think of it as a hilarious Ukranian tongue-in-cheek blend of Farcry, Just Cause 2 and Crysis. Down the line, I'm going to pick it up. It looks hilarious...I'll post you a trailer on FB.

Apparently it's fantastic, too, if you can forgive a little Eastern Bloc jank.

  8. I'm not sure whether Steam applies that mod, or whether I would need to seek it out; so I'm going to go with no. Sounds like I need to have a look for it though, so thanks for the heads-up.

That trailer for Xenus 2 looks freaking hilarious. YOU CAN RIDE A SHARK FFS!!!!

  9. Welcome back dude! I have been hitting up BC2: Vietnam. It is freaking awesome fun! I love the Rush game mode so much. It is easil;y the most satisfying experience I have had in a while.

In other news, not long now until Killzone 3!!!! Oh my god, I am so excited to play that game! I am even considering taking some time off work! LOL

  10. Ah, BF:BC2. Such fantastic memories. I don't think I'll return to it anytime soon (mainly because someone is borrowing it), but I love it all the same.

Killzone 3 will be fantastic, but I won't jump in straight away. Will wait til it is a wee bit cheaper.

  11. hey have you checked out CNET's top 40 games for 2011? Couple of interesting titles and predictions in there

  12. I thought it was a pretty safe list myself. Narrow it down to 10, otherwise you're just shooting from the hip at anything big enough to be considered a target.

The most interesting story of 2010 will be whether or not the 3DS succeeds or tanks. With the decline in the traditional portable gaming market, it will be interesting to see whether there is room for anymore competition in the sector. My eyes will be glued to the NPD figures for March, that's for sure.
